We often get questions about how to choose the right products. It can sometimes be confusing, as there are so many different beard care products on offer. We have outlined the most frequently asked questions. We will try to give answers and point you in the right direction when choosing beard care products, but we recommend experimenting and finding the right product for you, your skin and your hair type. Growing a beard means making a deal with yourself to devote more time to yourself!
Why use beard oil or beard balm?
Beard care products will be your helpers in the process of growing your beard. Nourish. Moisturise. Control. Both beard oil and balm help moisturise and nourish the skin and hairs, which means the hair grows more easily and in a more controlled way, and with a balm it is easier to shape the direction of the hairs. Beard care products can also help prevent flaky skin and hair breakage. And of course, these products will make your beard care ritual more pleasant – and the ladies always appreciate the scent.
How to choose between beard oil and beard balm?
We’d like to say just try both and feel what works better for you, but in short, the main keywords are:
- beard length
- skin type
- time
Beard length: if you are just starting to grow a beard, it’s better to choose beard oil – it will nourish the skin and hair, so the growing process will bother you less with itching. If your beard is already medium-length or long, it’s time to turn to beard balm, which will not only nourish and moisturise the hair, but also make the beard easier to control and shape, and “train” it to grow in the desired direction. In terms of time, beard oil is quicker and easier to apply, while a balm takes a little more patience, as it has a thicker consistency and you need to spend a little more time working it evenly through the whole beard.
Skin and hair type: whichever of these products you choose, pay attention to your skin and hair type and read about the chosen product. If you have particularly sensitive skin, make sure the product is free from colourants and fragrances, as these are often the main factors affecting skin sensitivity. If your hair is especially dry, use oil more often or choose a richer balm.
Time: if you can set aside more time for yourself, oil is a great choice, but we have noticed that many men who travel or spend their day constantly on the move prefer balm. The reason? Packaging – easy to toss into a pocket, and you know it isn’t a liquid that could spill. Frequency of use – balm needs to be applied less often. Liquid restrictions on flights – balm is not a liquid, so you don’t have to count how many ml you’ve packed.
Beard care products come in all kinds of forms, types and sizes – you just need to choose the one you like most and find most convenient.
Both beard oil and balm help moisturise and nourish the skin and hairs, which means the hair grows more easily and in a more controlled way, and with a balm it is easier to shape the direction of the hairs.
Can beard oil and beard balm be used together?
Of course, beard care products can be combined! Start with beard oil to moisturise and then shape with balm, but be careful with the amount of product. If there is too much, neither the skin nor the hair will be able to absorb all that goodness.
How to use beard oil?
Usually just a few drops of beard oil are needed, but it depends more on the length and volume of your beard. We recommend experimenting yourself with the amount of beard oil that works best for your beard. Drip the beard oil into your palm, rub your palms together and spread the oil evenly in the direction of beard growth, not forgetting to gently massage it into the skin under the beard as well. Afterwards we recommend combing the beard so that the oil is spread evenly along its whole length.
How to use beard balm?
Warm a small amount of balm in your palms and spread it evenly through the beard, massaging the balm into the skin under the beard as well. Afterwards we recommend combing the beard, shaping it the way you like. Remember, you can always add more, so start with a little and gradually find the amount of product that suits you.

Miķelis of Silmachy Remedies recommends: “Beard care products absorb great into both the skin and the beard right after a shower, when the beard has just been washed. After applying the product, I usually blow-dry my beard and shape it with a comb at the same time.”
